The Orange Conference Announces 2011 Theme: It’s Your Move

The Orange Conference Announces 2011 Theme: It’s Your Move

Call to Action is Issued to All Potential Attendees

ATLANTA, Sept. 23, 2010 /Christian Newswire/ — With record-breaking attendance in 2010, The Orange Conference, creative brainchild of Reggie Joiner and Orange, announces its theme for 2011 as a call to action, “It’s Your Move.” Now entering its fifth year, this conference has used a successful combination of biblical depth and comedic levity to equip thousands of church leaders who influence the next generation. The upcoming April experience has poised itself not only to equip, but also to empower. “It’s Your Move” enters into a new level of relationship with attendees to support, inspire and stand at their side as collaborative change agents in the future of the Church.

“This is probably the boldest theme we’ve announced,” says Reggie Joiner, founder of Orange and The Orange Conference. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done over the past four years, the relationships we’ve built, and the ability we’ve been given to influence local churches, leadership and families. Because we are all working for a common goal, our mission is simply to empower them to be their best.”

This unconventional gathering of innovative thinkers, speakers, church leaders and entertainers raises the bar to “re-think” the way that the traditional church model approaches family ministry. Orange pioneered a revolutionary strategy by entertaining the concept that parents, as partners with church leadership, create the most impacting center of influence for children and teenagers. “Thinking Orange” blends two vital, yet often unconnected worlds to reshape the current ministry model.

The Orange Conference will be held at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga., from Wednesday, April 27 to Friday, April 29, 2011. Registration opens on October 5, 2010, and an opening day package is offered for the first 24 hours. Further details can be found at http://www.theorangeconference.com.

Warrior Monk Novel Features Former CIA Assassin Turned Pastor

Warrior Monk Novel Features Former CIA Assassin Turned Pastor

MEDIA ADVISORY, Sept. 23, 2010 /Christian Newswire/ — Former Newsday columnist and current Dolan Media Company columnist Ray Keating has published his first novel — Warrior Monk: A Pastor Stephen Grant Novel.

Warrior Monk revolves around a former CIA assassin, Stephen Grant, who has lived a far different, relatively quiet life as a parish pastor in recent years. However, a shooting at his church, an historic papal proposal, and threats to the Pope’s life mean that Grant’s former and current lives collide. Grant must tap the varied skills learned as a government agent, a theologian and a pastor not only to protect the Pope, but also to feel his way through a minefield of personal challenges.

Keating said, “My hope is that this is an entertaining, compelling story of murder, action, humor and romance, while touching on various religious, moral and political topics important to the twenty-first century, including conservatives versus liberals in Christianity, terrorism, torture, extreme environmentalism, ecumenism, and the challenges of relativism, militant secularism, and radical Islam.”

Warrior Monk: A Pastor Stephen Grant Novel can be purchased from Amazon.com.

Review copies, interviews for the media, and author appearances are available upon request.

Advance Praise for Warrior Monk

Larry Kudlow, host of CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report,” said: “Ray Keating has created a fascinating and unique character in Pastor Grant. The way Keating intertwines politics, national security and faith into a compelling thriller is sheer delight.”

U.S. Congressman Pete King, Ranking Member on the House Homeland Security Committee, commented: “CIA intrigue, the Vatican, international terrorism and brutal assassinations make Warrior Monk a fast-moving, riveting read right out of today’s — and tomorrow’s — headlines. Add challenging religious issues, which the author makes us confront, and you have a brilliant novel. Ray Keating knows what he is writing about and writes it extraordinarily well.”

Is There a War Between Social and Economic Conservatives

Is There a War Between Social and Economic Conservatives — The Family in America Editor to Speak at Family Research Council

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23, 2010 /Christian Newswire/ — Bob Patterson, research fellow and editor of The Howard Center’s quarterly journal The Family in America, will be one of the speakers at an important symposium on the relationship between economic and social conservatism sponsored by the Family Research Council on Friday, September 24, at 1 PM, “Is There a War Between Social and Economic Conservatives?”

Larry Jacobs, Vice President of The Howard Center for Family, Religion & Society, commented: “The so-called war between economic and social conservatives serves only the liberal objective to distract and divide potential allies against radical leftists. Diverse historical leaders such as Adam Smith, Benjamin Franklin, Alexis de Tocqueville, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt have all agreed on the uniqueness of the American identity — married, child-rich homes. The American ideals and values centering around marriage, children, and protection of human life continue to be on the hearts of the American people during the upcoming election. I can’t think of a better scholar and writer than Bob Patterson to express how social issues are inseparable from economic issues and hold the key to returning America to her greatness of married, child-rich families and economic prosperity.”

Many observers of the political scene have commented on the sometimes tenuous relationship between social and economic conservatives.

According to the political journalists Jonathan Martin and Ben Smith, “the battles over morality-based cultural issues such as gay rights, abortion and illegal drugs that did so much to drive the conservative movement and dominated the political conversation for more than 30 years have abated, giving way not just to broad economic anxiety but to a new set of emotionally charged issues” (Politico, August 20, 2010).

To discuss whether this is true or not, Family Research Council is hosting this symposium featuring three of the nation’s leading observers of the political scene. Joining Bob Patterson will be New York Times columnist Ross Douthat who has written extensively about religion, family, and the public life and Lawrence Reed, president of the Foundation for Economic Education and former president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

Patterson, an adjunct research fellow at The Howard Center for Family, Religion & Society, recently wrote the important article, “Fiscal Conservatism is Not Enough: What Social Conservatives Offer the Party of Lincoln,” published in the Spring 2010 issue of The Family in America: A Journal of Public Policy. In it he states, “As much as the media like to portray the GOP as beholden to the Religious Right, the reality is that Republican elites, with rare exceptions, are more beholden to economic conservatives and foreign-policy hawks than to social conservatives” (p.116).

To join in on this important discussion, call Family Research Council at 800-225-4008 to register. If you can’t attend in person, you can still watch the live webcast by going to http://www.frc.org/eventregistration/is-there-a-war-between-social-and-economic-conservatives.

Episcopal Bishops Naively Push Liberalized Immigration

Episcopal Bishops Naively Push Liberalized Immigration

“Instead of liberal political advocacy on issues like immigration for which they lack serious expertise, the bishops of the declining Episcopal Church would better look to their own troubled house.” — Mark Tooley, IRD President

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23, 2010 /Christian Newswire/ — Recently meeting in Phoenix Arizona, the Episcopal Church’s House of Bishops issued a pastoral letter urging liberalized immigration policies for the U.S., including a conditional amnesty for illegal immigrants and higher legal immigration, including work visas. The bishops implied support for virtual open borders by rejecting any criminalization of undocumented immigration, while complaining of America’s “racism and bigotry.”

The shrinking and much divided U.S. Episcopal Church is over 90 percent white and native born, with only a tiny percentage of members who are immigrants.

IRD President Mark Tooley commented:

“Christians and others of good will may disagree over the political specifics of a complicated issue like immigration. The Scriptures and Christian tradition offer no direct political guidance here. But the Episcopal Church’s bishops, so divided on Christian doctrine, exceed their mandate when they demand adherence to a rigid political agenda.

“Their seeming affirmation of unrestricted immigration as an intrinsic right seems more Utopian than rooted in Christian understandings of a fallen world.

“These bishops would better devote themselves to reviving their own troubled denomination, especially by evangelistically reaching out to America’s growing immigrant population with a robust Gospel message appealing to more than just liberal, upper middle class Anglo-Americans.”

The Institute on Religion & Democracy works to reaffirm the church’s biblical and historical teachings, strengthen and reform its role in public life, protect religious freedom, and renew democracy at home and abroad.

‘A Pledge to America’ — Released by the Senate Republican Communications Center

‘A Pledge to America’ — Released by the Senate Republican Communications Center

‘We Strongly Support this Effort, and Together, House and Senate Republicans Will Continue to Fight for These Principles.’

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23, 2010 /Standard Newswire/ — U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Senate Republican Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ), Senate Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Senate Republican Policy Committee Chairman John Thune (R-SD), National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (R-TX), and Senate Republican Conference Vice Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY) released the following joint statement in support of “A Pledge to America.”

“Americans are speaking out and we are listening. The proposals put forward today by House Republicans reflect what Americans are saying. They want to us to focus on jobs first, fight wasteful Washington spending, repeal and replace the health spending bill and shrink an exploding deficit. Americans want a smaller, less costly and more accountable government.

“We strongly support this effort, and together, House and Senate Republicans will continue to fight for these principles. While the White House will retain the veto pen, House and Senate Republicans will focus on making America more competitive, reducing the size and cost of government, keeping our nation strong and secure, and reining in the massive health care costs and mandates imposed by the Democrats’ health spending bill.”
